Vintage Trees

I’m still tinkering with the vintage photo look. This is my latest effort.

It’s Rare, But Sometimes Everybody Gets the Joke!

And yes, it was probably inappropriate, but I don’t care who you are, that was funny!

Dude, Where’s My Nap?

He was actually just mid-blink, but it was funny as hell.

Lost in the Music

You might imagine that it would be difficult or impossible to pick an absolute favorite single solitary picture out of the countless ones I have seen, and you would have been right until very recently. A couple months ago, I “rediscovered” a picture I had first seen many years ago, and although it resonated strongly with me even then, I find it even more striking now. Taken in 1972 in New Orleans by a photographer named George W. Gardner, the photo has no title that I’m aware of, although I have taken to calling it “Lost in the Music”. It hasn’t spectacular color, nor laser-sharp focus, nor jaw-dropping subject matter, but it captivates me like no other image ever has. It takes me back to the simpler days of my own childhood, before the process of living had taken such a toll. I often wonder where life has taken the two main subjects. I would guess the little girl is now in her mid-40’s, with children of her own, and I wonder if she can still get lost in the music. What does she think when she looks at this picture? Or perhaps she has never seen it herself. The man in the picture is probably a grandfather now, and I wonder how he feels about this capture of his younger self. Does it feel him with a sense of longing for that simpler time? Does he remember the song in which he reveled on that day 40 years ago? I’m not sure why, but I hope he does, and I hope he can still lose himself in the music.

Crystal Bob

I haven’t gotten around to doing much with my new orb yet, but I took it to a birthday party today, and it provided plenty of amusement.

Digital Light and Magic

It’s amazing what can be done to an image after it’s taken. Straight out of the camera, the best of the images below were mediocre, and the worst were, well, bad. I tried several different techniques to make these more appealing. Black and white conversion, painterly effects, vintage processing, tone mapping. Some came out better than others, but I’m learning a lot about all the processing techniques.

Another Smackerel of Red Rocks

The amphitheater at Red Rocks has its own appeal outside of the natural elements. I love the flow and symmetry.

Tiny Stairway

Imagine a tiny stairway where the steps themselves are wooden matchsticks, bordered by tiny pebbles on either side. That was not my original intention here, but as I worked on the shot, I realized that this is what felt just right.

Another Dose of Red Rocks

I’ve spent the last several hours editing pictures from the walk today, and I’m really pleased with the way a lot of them came out. I got about a dozen I want to post, so I’m gonna send them up three or four at a time…

Red Rocks Rocks

Went on a little photo walk to Red Rocks Park this morning with fellow G+er Gizella Nyquist. It was kind of cool to have someone along that understands that hurrying along when I have a camera in my hands is not going to happen. The sky was utterly cloud-free and the sun was brilliant, so it wasn’t the best lighting for doing landscapes, but it was great fun nonetheless.

He’s Blue, and He’s Boss

Yeah, I know…better late than never. Anyway, since we seem to be on a bird theme the last few days…the feeder was gone from the platform, but he was defending it anyway, just in case.

Chickadee-dee-dee

Feels good to get outside a little. I’ve been cooped up too long. This little guy was squawking like mad, so I just thought he wanted his picture taken…

The Fabulous Folding Fowl

This guy had just finished showing his neighbors who was boss, and decided a good stretch was in order.

Rugged, Yet Stylish

Cammie, with her new driver’s license and her “new” truck, wanted a “legit” shot that highlighted her boots AND the truck. The hardest part was creating the custom license plate…

The Other Cowgirls

Cammie and Sarah are only interested in cowgirls as a fashion, but they certainly are beautiful in the hat…
